Preparing your vehicle for extreme cold weather

Preparing your vehicle for extreme cold weather

Here are a few ways to prep your vehicle for the extreme cold ahead.

  1. Top up the fluids.
    • Check your windshield washer fluid and make sure it is filled up with a winter blend. There are special winter windshield washer fluids that have more alcohol added to them so they are less likely to freeze up on you.
    • Refill or flush the anti-freeze if it hasn’t been changed in a while.
    • Check your engine oil and consider switching to a cool-temp blend with lower viscosity for better performance in the cold temperatures.
  2. Get Winter Wiper Blades.
Installing winter windshield wipers can do wonders for your visibility during harsh weather. These blades are designed to withstand extremely cold temps and perform much better because they are more flexible protecting your windshield from the build-up of snow and ice.
  3. Check your Battery.
One cold morning can finish off your battery. Be sure to assess your battery a look for signs of corrosion before the cold weather hits because hot summer days take a toll on car batteries. It’s recommended to change your battery every 3 years.
  4. Check the Tire Pressure.
When the temperatures drop, so can tire pressure. To get the best traction during winter, you’ll want your tires properly inflated. You can also consider putting Nitrogen in your tires which is larger molecules so it doesn’t seep out as fast as air.
  5. Invest in Winter Tires.
All-season tires are OK most of the time, but winter or snow tires will give you the most traction in extremely cold temps and snow and ice.
  6. Grease the Locks.
When it gets extremely cold out, your car locks can freeze up. Use a spray lubricant like WD-40 on the lock cylinders and door hinges to keep your vehicles’ moving parts working as they should.
